Self-Assesment

SELF ASSESSMENT

Since high school, since I ever wrote my first essay in my life, I never considered myself a good writer. I am going to be honest writing is not something that I enjoy very much. It is not my favorite thing to do, if I were to choose between solving math problems and writing a paper, I would take solving the math problems any day. However, I can admit that I write decently and on a good day I can write pretty good essays and papers. I feel that this course has helped me improve my writing. I did not necessarily achieve all the objectives for this course, but I can say I got pretty close to some and achieved others such as strengthening my source by evaluating, integrating, quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing etc…

The very first assignment that we had for this class was the introduction letter. For that assignment we had to write a letter to professor Jacobson in which we would introduce ourselves by writing about who we are, our goals, challenges, and more. This was a very simple assignment and I feel I did pretty good on this one. After this assignment I thought the rest was going to be easy. However, I have to admit it challenges me a bit.

The next assignment after the introduction letter was the lab reports. For this assignment we had to compare and contrast two lab reports. This was not my first compared and contrast essay, however, this was a little different from my other compared essay that I wrote in the past for another English class. I thought it was easy and I thought I did a good job with it, not that I did bad but could have done better. My main problem here is that I did not provide the adequate examples for each essay or they were not specific enough. Next, we had the technical description.

For the technical description, I had never in my life written a paper like that. All my papers in the past were just regular essays about researching, literature, or even a personal anecdote. For this assignment we had to pick a device and give a technical description. When writing this assignment, I had no idea how to start because I had never written something like it and despite the professor’s explanations in class, I still was not sure how to follow. I thought for the first time I did well, but I could have done better. After the technical description we had the engineering proposal.

The engineering proposal was a group project in which we had to come up with a new innovation that did not exist already and just like in the technical description describe how we would do it. We had to explain what our innovation would do and how we would make it happen. I do not know what things we did wrong because we did not get any comments, but I can say that we could definitely have done better. I wished we had a little more time even though we had a reasonable amount of time for this project.

All of those were the main assignments throughout this course and they all challenged me in some way. I do not believe I achieved all the course objectives. For example, I still struggle understanding proofreading and revising. I still struggle understanding the difference between those two and editing. However, despite that I can say that this course has helped me explore other forms of writing that I am sure are going to be useful for the future. I can say I have seen an improvement in my writing and when providing evidence in my essays. If I compare myself writing now to before this semester, I can say that writing has become easier for me, the way I organize my ideas and put them together.

This was not an easy semester. It challenged me especially because learning remotely is hard. I was ready to teach myself everything in my classes because I feel I do not learn at all remotely, however, I have to admit that this class was helpful in the sense that it showed me new writing assignments such as the technical description that I had never done before. Despite, I cannot say I achieve all the learning objectives I can say that I have learnt a lot for future classes.
